Radiation vs surgery

by MSeyshell, May 22, 2001 12:00AM
I have a spot of basal cell cancer on the side of my nose.  My doctor has recommended radiation as opposed to Mohs surgery as the surgery would leave scarring.  I am a 42 year old white female with a history of this type of cancer.  So far it has been confined to my lower legs.  In your opinion, is the radiation a better alternative to the surgery?  Thank you.

Hard to say.  I would get a consultation from a good Mohs' surgeon before deciding.  Either way there will be scarring, but there needn't be that much.  The surgeon can give you a good idea about what you can expect going that route, and the radiatin therapist likewise.  As to efficacy--total cure--I'd give a slight not to surgery, if all else is about equal.

Best.
