Hi
Thanks for the update.
The cause of Pityriasis rosea is not known but it is self limiting and should resolve within ten weeks. Resolution should start by the 4th or 6th week and this is not contagious. Recurrence is very minimal in most cases.
Let your child enjoy the summer. For any itchiness, consult your physician for topical medications. Do not pick on the affected areas and as much as possible avoid scratching to prevent further irritation.
Keep us posted for anything!
By the time she came home from her father's house, it was everywhere on her trunk, back, abdomen, upper legs and forearms. Thank goodness it rarely gets on the face. LOL She is already upset that it won't go away for 6-10 weeks. That's her whole summer....
YAY! Guess what it is?? Pityriasis Rosea... the patch that looked like ringworm was the "herald patch" Her PCP diagnosed it as soon as I showed her the patch on her back and was like Oh I know EXACTLY what it is. Thank goodness we know what it is. So thank you for your time and knowledge. I appreciate your responses and since there is no cure, only time, we will just wait it out. Thanks again!!! Have a great day,
Hi
You are welcome.
As it is present in both arms , try to check if the areas between the fingers (finger web) and also the areas of the wrists are predominantly involved. If scabies is being considered here, try to keep the affected areas of the skin covered. Wash the linens, avoid sharing of clothes, towels and other personal things. These are just ways of preventing any spread of the infection. Since scabies is only a differential at this point, it is best to have this assessed first by your doctor.
I have other photos of them on both arms but this was the best one.
Thank you for your evaluation. It is itchy but not painful. She doesn't wear a watch and her perfume is one that she's worn often. It is on both forearms but nowhere else. It didn't appear swollen before but she may have been itching it. I was thinking scabies also but having no experience with the illness, I wasn't sure what to look for. I will make her an appointment with her PCP and go from there. I was just hoping not to have to pay a $25 co-pay for something that can be taken care of with OTC products. LOL Thanks again Dr. Lacuesta....
Hi
The area appears to be swollen. Is it painful? If this is recent in onset ,then this may be dermatitis. Has you daughter been using a new watch, or used a perfume or touched any chemicals which could have caused this? Is this only present in one arm?
If this is present only in one arm and there are no associated joint pains, joint swelling and other symptoms, then this may be a dermatitis. I suggest that that you have this assessed by a dermatologist. She may need skin scrapings from the area to have it microscopically evaluated. If the rash is itchy then scabies also have to be considered. Any exposure to anyone with scabies?
