Rash all over my body

by JO in AZ, May 24, 2006 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,
Approximately 8 years ago I noticed a small ring of bumps  ( like goose-bumps) on my upper right thigh.  The ring was approximately 3/4 inch in diameter  It remained dormant for  3-4 years, then one day I noticed I had quite a few rings on my  right thigh. A year  later it had spread over both my thighs and eventually onto my stomach. I now had many rings of bumps from 3/4 inch to 1 ½ inch slowly changing from rings to circles of small bumps.   It looked like a rash of ringworm, but it did not itch and was not scaly. It was all below the surface. It has never bothered me, except now it looked like one big blemish.  More rings kept appearing until my stomach and upper thighs looked like one big rash.
After reading info on ringworm, I did not believe it to be ringworm. I checked with my doctor, and she did not know what it could be, she said to check with an allergy doctor.  I went to see an allergy doctor, and the doctor's helper took a sample and later called and said that the results came back and showed that it was not ringworm ( even though I had told her it was not ringworm).  I never did get to see the doctor.
Now it is spreading to my arms and legs.  My stomach looks like a big rash. Some days it looks mild ( I can hardly see it ), but other days it is very noticeable. My thighs seem to have finally cleared up somewhat, but now I  have some spots that look like mosquito bites.
I would like to know what it is and what to do for it.  Or what kind of doctor should I go to that would know what it is.
I am a 63 year old woman in good health, I do not take any medication for anything.  I am 5'2" and 30 lbs overweigh.  I stopped smoking 12 years ago and slowly started gaining weight.  I think I am  developing allergies as my eyes sometimes are red and irritated, but that is common in Arizona.
Thank you for your assistance,
J.O.

You need to see a skin doctor.  The skin doctor may be able to tell by looking, or may need to perform a test such as a skin biopsy.  Many skin rashes that aren't fungal ("ringworm") can look round.  Once the doctor finds out what it is, proper treatment can be recommended.

Best.
