Rash on Penis

Rash on Penis

My husband has this rash on his penis. It is on the head and  it has small bumps and it is red. He is also not circumcised and it is very itchy and sometimes painful and it is sensitive. He was told that it was jock itch and the cream that they gave him is not working. I bought some vagisil type cream and he says that it helps but only for a little while. We were tested for everything and all STD's were ruled out. Does anyone know what this is and if there is anything that might help him.

Hi,

Rash on the head of the penis especially for uncircumcised males may suggest a balanitis. Balanitis is not necessarily a sexually transmitted disease. This may be due to a bacterial or fungal infection .Other causes of balanitis will be a dermatitis or psoriasis.

During sexual activity, mild irritation or injuries on the penile surface may lead to invasion of these organisms which may lead to an infection.

I suggest that you have your husband assessed by a dermatologist (was this done already?).A complete physical examination may be needed to rule out the cause .  A fungal infection with an overlying dermatitis or bacterial infection may cause this condition to persist. A preparation containing both a corticosteroid and antifungal may help. Discuss this with your physician since the penile skin is fragile and sensitive and certain medications when applied inappropriately may cause further irritation.

Hi,

This could be due to acne/imples/ or infection of the hair follicles called folliculitis or some bacterial infection/ fungal infction or some skin nodules etc.

Nothing can be said with surety without having a look at the lesions.

It would be best to reconsult your doctor about your symptoms if they do not resolve and get a proper clinical examination.

Keep the area clean and wear clothes washed in a few drops of chlorhexidine preferably and dried in the sun.

You could take oral antihistamine or antiallergic medications for the itching.

Let us know about what your doctor advises.

Regards.
