Rash on b/f's penis...we are both extremely worried!!!

by XworriedXgirlX, Jan 04, 2005 12:00AM
Hi Dr.  Over the passed week, my boyfriend and I have engaged in unprotected sexual activity a number of times. During this time, my boyfriend was getting over the flu, and I was taking a very strong antibiotic to clear up a case of strep throat I was suffering from about a week prior.  As a result of the antibiotic, I got a yeast infection but didn't realize it right away.  My vagina was a little itchy, but I figured it was just from having sex so often in a short period of time; that has happened to me in the past.  The itchiness did not subside and yesterday after having sex for the first time in about 2 days and each of us taking showers, he showed me a small red patch on the left side of his penis shaft starting just below the head.  Initially, he said it was swollen but the swelling went down as the day passed and I figured it was just swollew from the sex.  He said it didn't hurt, bleed, or expel any fluid but it was  itchy.  I then did some research on my own conditions and saw my doctor this morning who gave me medication to clear up my yeast infection.  I was perscribed Diflucan and Monistat 1-day Treatment.  But in my research, I found that, though it's rare, having unprotected sex while a female has a yeast infection can cause a small rash on the males penis.  I'm hoping that this is true and that this is what he has, but my boyfriend is quite scared and so am I for that matter.  Is there anything else this could be? Will his rash go away by itself?  If not, what can he do to make the rash go away as soon as possible?  Would the external cream that comes with the Monistat work for his rash or is there some other over the counter product he can get to clear it up if it doesn't go away on it's own?  He doesn't have medical coverage right now and though I offered to pay for a trip to his dr. he is far too scared.  I see my OB/GYN yearly and have tested negative for all STD's.  He was tested about a year ago by his dr. and he too tested negatively.  Is it possible that one of us had something that wouldn't show up in a test but is surfacing now? Please help!!!

I don't think he has anything to worry about.  You are right that transmitting yeast from women to men is uncommon.  I think it's likely that he just has irritation from sex, as you suspected.  I advise him to get some clotrimazole cream 1% and hydrocortisone cream 1% (both over the counter) and apply them both twice a day, one on top the other (the order doesn't matter.)  That should clear him up in 10 days or less.  If it doesn't, then he should see a doctor.  Nothing to be scared about--that's what doctors are for.

Best.
