Re: Shiney painful penis

by shedsomelight, Aug 31, 2009 10:53PM
question along the lines of  the questions / concerns of silverbeach.
Firstly I have had a similar occurrence / situation for almost 5 years.
Had countless tests - negative for everything (all STD's including herpes HIV)
Started 5 years ago after sex (protected) with a new partner.
Within 12 hours penis was painful to urinate - then 2 weeks later eyes got red painful and irritated
No joint pain at this time. Took doxycicline anyway just to be sure as chlamydia was cited as most likely trigger even though all tests are negative
After 4-6 weeks things calmed down but penis remained red as did scrotum.
2 years later got staff infection after dental work. Got quite sick / fatigued - then joint pain started.
No pain in penis or eyes this time around. Saw rheumatologist who thought it was RA and started me on sulfasalazene
Had 2+ years with no pain in penis or eye involvement just fluctuating levels of joint pain mostly right hip.- then a few weeks had an  "outbreak" after taking medrol to help with joint pain. Currently have sore red penis, eye pain, blurring vision and joint pain. Thought it might be herpes since I also had a cold sore on lip at the same time.
Have seen primary care doctor, infectious disease specialist, urologist, opthamologist, rheumatologist and dermatologist. No-one thinks it looks like herpes and blood work was negative for HSV test. Also told 4-5 years would be long time between herpes outbreaks they usually happen more frequently.
Have been told it was fungal, reiters syndrome, several unrelated conditions occurring at once and essentially that it was all in my head (loved that one) Went through the same thing 5 years ago without any insight.
No medication, topical cream, has helped then or now. Blood work only significant for mild anemia and low monocyte count. Only sexual partner in past 3 years has been fiance. Had occurrence of this before we met and she has no symptoms. To silverbeach  -I understand your frustration with the lack of a clear diagnosis and the impact on your life. Personally I think you should -as I intend to - keep looking for an answer. I allowed myself to be persuaded to "stop worrying about it" and "get on with my life" 5 years ago and now have to deal with my symptoms again. I would like to know if anyone has had a similar problem successfully diagnosed and treated or if they know of any good hospitals / doctors who can put the pieces together. I feel like no-one sees the complete picture only their specialty area. Thanks.
