Recent mole removal

I had a mole removed from my inner thigh 3 weeks ago.  At my post-surgery appointment everything looked fine, the incision looked almost healed.  The doctor said the stitches were the dissolving kind and would dissolve in a few weeks.  I was not given any instructions about care.  Yesterday the incision became painful and itchy.  It looked like it was becoming infected.  It was already too late in the day to call the doctor.  What should I be doing until I can get in touh with the doctor?  The pain and itchiness are really annoying.
