Recieved Laser Hair Removal Treatments I Regret Part 1

by DFPG, Apr 27, 2005 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,
My name is Chris and I am 22 years old. I underwent 3 treatments of laser hair removal and believe that I have made the biggest mistake of my life. I would be very grateful if you could answer a couple of questions for me. For a little background information, I underwent 3 treatments of laser hair removal with the Candela GentleLASE laser in order to THIN out my beard. I didn’t want to completely remove it. I was told this was feasible. It was after my third treatment that I realized that the results I had in mind weren’t feasible at all. I have since stopped the treatments and I’m now trying to determine how much permanent damage I’ve done to myself. My last treatment was in September of 2004. For many months there were lots of spots that were bare, but in the last couple of months I’ve noticed lots of hairs growing in. It seems as though it is filling in almost as thick as how it was before I started treatments. I’m of Italian descent and have a very thick, black beard. If you could answer these following questions, you would really help out my situation as I am struggling badly with regret and just trying to find some answers.

1. First off, some of the hairs that are growing back in aren’t growing in the same color they used to be (black). NONE of them are growing in white, but some of them are growing in light with hardly any pigment at all. Is this permanent or will the pigment fill in with time? I have actually studied up on the hair follicle and its components, and I’ve learned that it is the melanocyte stem cells that produce the melanocytes that produce the pigment for the hair. Because the hairs aren’t growing in white (they have some pigment), could it be that the melanocyte population just hasn’t caught up to the way they it was, or is my hair permanently going to be that color? Basically this question is leading into my next one which is the most important to me, and I’m trying to figure out if I’ve permanently damaged the melanocytes in my hairs, or if because my hair is growing back and obviously not permanently damaged, that the melanocytes are only temporarily damaged as well.

***I posted another question, please look for it...it will be under Recieved Laser Hair Removal Treatments I Regret Part 2.
