Red bumps on genital area and buttocks

by Becky13, Jan 09, 2005 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,

I have gone to the gynocologist and a medical family practioner about this problem but I am still not sure what's causing this.  Over the course of about 6 months with a somewhat regular use of spermicidal condoms, I have developed small red bumps in my genital area.  I also have a few red bumps in my buttocks area but I am not sure if they are related.  At first, there were a few bumps in the genital area and it was barely noticable.  Now, I seem to have alot of them especially after having sex.  The bumps go away but it takes a few days and these bumps are not itchy.  My gyno said that it might be the spermicidal condom but my family practioner said it was just from shaving my genital area.  I have been shaving down there for about 5 years and have never had anything like these bumps.  Do you think I could be allergic to nonoxynol-9?  What are the symptoms?  Do you know of any places that can do allergy testing without a doctor's recommendation to see a dermatologist since my primary care physician will not write me a recommendation?

Also, during this time I have had a yeast and bacteria infection due mostly to dryness.  I have never had any type of infections in that area before and also have never felt my vagina this dry so now I use lubricants but I was wondering if this is related to the spermicide or not?

Any additional light you can shed on this topic would be great.  What do you think I should do next?  I don't really mind the bumps but it seems they are multiplying and that's what bothers me sometimes.

Thanks for the help.

Allergic reactions to creams and such are uncommon, and consist of scaly rashes, not bumps.  If these bumps are more visible after sex, they're probably just blocked pores.  Treatments don't affect those much and aren't necessary.  I suppose you could try a different form of contraception that doesn't rely on a spermicide, but I doubt that the effort is worth it.  I don't think these bumps are infected either, and if they don't trouble you otherwise, I'd ignore them.

Best.
