Red bumps on upper arms

by kita8706, Jul 14, 2009 10:58AM
Ever since I was little I have had what looks like a rash on my upper arms. Little red bumps that sometimes have a white center like a pimple, but nothing else (like the puss or scabbing) that you would attribute with acne. It doesn't itch, burn, or otherwise bother me except cosmetically, and that my skin seems to be very dry in that region and lotions do not help. I am 22 years old and slightly overweight...It covers the enitre part of my upper arm, makes it a little embarrassing to wear sleeveless tops... :-)

Please, any ideas on what this is and how I can treat it??

Hello,
Without examination, confirmation of a diagnosis is tough, but it sounds like keratosis pilaris. The other possibility is of folliculitis.Keratosis pilaris is a common genetic follicular condition that is manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin like goose bumps and hence colloquially referred to as "chicken skin".
Keratosis pilaris occurs when the human body produces excess keratin, a natural protein in the skin. There is currently no known cure for keratosis pilaris, however, there are effective treatments available which make its symptoms less apparent. Treatment includes tretinoin or Triamcinolone cream or Adapalene, a retinoid medication. Exfoliation, intensive moisturizing creams, creams and lotions containing alpha hydroxy acids and urea may be used to temporarily improve the appearance and texture of affected skin.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts.Kind regards.
