Red line below my bottom lip

I have had a red line below my bottom lip for the past 2 years, approximately. It occasionally fades and then fires up but is always constantly there.
Lately, it flares up whenever I eat food, drink, put vasaline on it, or if my lips are dry. Which is obviously a problem, because when my lips are dry in the winter, I put vasaline on them.

I do not lick my lips. It is not a coldsore. I know what those are, and how to lick my lips. I assure you. I do not. My Dermatologist recognised right away that it was not due to licking my lips aswell.

This is a recurring problem that I have tried to hide/cure with many ointments. Including various vasaline types, lip chap (with sunscreen protection), lip conditioner/balm (blistex sunscreen protection), also have tried Cortate Hydrocortisone ointment. Which only seems to glosson my lips and make them seem to be more red.

I have also tried "Ihle's paste" for rashes, mostly used for relief of dermatitis and diaper rash, which seems to help momentarily, but only for 10 or so minutes. Also annoying because it is a bright white cream.

I have talked to my Dermatologist, and she suggested changing toothpastes, to see if I was allergic. I switched to colgate, and it is not working. She also suggested that I might have to go on a mild steriod cream, but I haven't revisited her, so I have no gotten a prescription.

Please help me. I have attached a photo of when my lips are at a normal state. They get quite red when they are flared up. Is this Eczema? What should I do?

Hi, I have been having very similar experience the past several months. I thought it was from weather change, cooler/dryer climate. It may effect it but also think it's a reaction to certain foods, spicy or acidic seems to flair up from eating that. I prefer to try more natural ways of healing and have found that vitamin E oil directly on lips and under bottom lip helps soothe and stops the burning, itchy feeling. I do have appt for dermatologist next week and will write back what he says it is (thinks it could be)

Has anyone found a solution or help for this. I've been battling this as well. Lower vermillion red irritation. I've tried vaseline and been to a derm and they prescribed steroid cream as well as vitamins for from a doc.

Hey guys, so i think I found the solution to our problem. Like I mentioned in my previous comment, I've had this problem for almost a year now and it made me really depressed because I'm a decent looking guy but that red line made me extremely self conscious. Everytime I hate it would flare up, making it very unappealing to look at. Also, when I'm not eating, it still looks horrible just not as bad during my eating time.

Anyways, I found a solution that's working for me. Started using an exfoliating cleanser on my face to get arid of the blemishes and acne on my face. So after I finish washing my face, I would put on the coconut oil on my lip. And guess what the result several hour later.... The red line was dispearing!!!

Then I woke up this morning and it's also all gone!!!!! I thought it be great to share my remedy with you guys considering we may have the same issues. Anyways pm me for more detail instructions if you want to know more about my solution to this problem.

First puts you lips in hot water I mean take a napkin and dip it in hot water and put it on your lips for 2-5 min then out push ur lip in and out with out rubbing them together do this each minut u put on the wrm water... Then put on Vaseline I know u tried it but trust me it works. Put a buch on over night on ur lips and a lot around ur lips. When u wake up do not I repeat do not do anything to ur lip don't even runb them together. Then take hot water this time warmer and do the same thing I said in the beginning then brush and do what ever after a meal aplly a bit of Vaseline and then let it sink don't rub it with ur lips. Also do not aplly Chapstick unless it is Vaseline. Then do this for a week or two then it will go a way. I have the same problem and my dermatologist ren amended me

February 21, 2014......Recently I tried Crest Pro Health Clinical Mouthwash and when I went to take a swig of it, it burned my mouth and I instantly threw out the bottle!.....This was 4 weeks ago.....I went to a Dermatologist 2x  (at $60.00 a visit) and first they told me it was an allergic reaction to the mouthwash so they put me on Desonide 0.05% cream, I tried that for one week and NO improvement....then I went back to the Dermatologist and said I needed a "stronger" cream, so then gave me Alclometasone 0.05% clear ointment and I have been using that for a few days and NO improvement...he also told me that is can be Melkersson Rosenthal Syndrome which JUST HAPPENS and nobody knows why (well sorry I don't accept that diagnosis).......it's weird, it seems like I have my bottom lip, and then another "line" under that....and some swelling in my chin area.....I took a photo, wish I could post it here to see if anyone else is having this same issue?  You can email me directly if you want....Tom at ***@****

Forgot to mention, my gp said it was vascular and would not go away.  He is a good doctor but I really don't think it is vascular unless my shaving in that area damaged the capillaries in some way.

I have the same thing - mine started two weeks ago.  I know I shaved that area the day before with an old disposable razor so I attributed it to that but no antibiotic cream has helped - my gp gave me some antibiotics after I begged for them but I do not really see any change.  As  I am female, the only way to semi-disguise it is to use lip liner.  When I was much younger, I had something similar above my lip and I was prescribed a steriod cream and told only to use hypoallergenic lipstick.  I wish my derm was still in practice - maybe he would know how to solve this.  Has anyone found a solution? At least I know I am not alone.

I have the EXACT same issue going on 3 years, tried everything.   It is very frustrating and seems as if medical science has failed.

I have the exact same thing. Lining underneath my lip has got more and more red over the past 18 months. No ointment, cream or lotion does anything to improve it and if fact most make it worse.  Been to a doctor, sent me to a derm - she said it may be solar cheilitis. Stay out of the sun.  Wasn't satisfied and went to another. Biopsy and three stitches later said it may be spongeotic dermatitis but unsure, go see a professor for patch testing cos it's probably an allergic reaction.  Did that he said he doesn't know what it is... if anybody has any answers I'd be very very keen to hear... I am now looking like a clown especially after I eat anything at all... help please...

I've had the same issue for over a year now (EXACT). My derm told me the same thing, try switching toothpastes. I've read the vitB as well and have tried both switching up toothpaste & vitamin B compex, but nothing!!!! It's completely annoying. Did you find anything new? Very curious to hear it! Thanks!
