Red sore between thigh and scrotum

by JRicco, Jun 18, 2004 12:00AM
Hey Doc,

I was hoping you could help me out.  In late April (a little shy of two months ago) I had unpretected sex with a girl whom I barely knew.  Anyway, a few weeks after that I noticed a bunch of pimple like bumps around the groin.  About tree weeks ago, I saw my dermatologist and he told me it was Molloscum, and perscribed Aldera, and Tagment to speed up the immune system and get rid of them.  I am currently taking the medicine for that and its supposed to take six weeks or so.  Last weekend however, I woke up in the morning and noticed a couple (TWO) between my inner thigh and my scrotum, actually, one of them may be on the scrotum its hard to tell.  They were a little bit tender but nothing to painful - felt a little like jock-itch.  Anyway, I noticed that the one closer to the inner thy was getting a little more irritated and has turned darker red.  It doesn't really burn or itch but is sensitive when it rubs between my thigh and sack, and is sensitive to touch.  I'm scared to look too much because I think it may be herpes, just as I thought with the molloscum.  In addition about a week before noticing the two sores, I was experiencing very slight pain in my groin.  Also, this whole week the muscles in my lower back have been a bit tender, which I heard is a symptom of herpes, and is unusual for me.  I'm going in for a follow up check in three weeks for the molloscum, but I don't know if I can wait without asking someone about this.  Those are the only symptoms that I have noticed so far. I'm a mess, and really regret what I did.  What do ya think.  Herpes?

Not likely.  The incubation period of newly-acquired herpes is 3-5 days, so even if it were herpes, this occurrence wouldn't be related to the sexual encounter.  Also, your symptoms more closely match folliculitis, or inflamed mollusca, either spontaneous (they do that sometimes as they die) or from the Aldara.

So there is considerable circumstantial evidence that this is not herpes.  Having said that, one can't of course diagnose this without seeing it.  So if you're that worried, have someone (perhaps a walk-in clinic) see it.  But as I said, herpes does not sound likely at all.

Best.
