Retin-A and Pregnancy

Retin-A and Pregnancy

Dear Dr. R,
I am a 37 year old female who has been using Retin-A .05% cream for approximately 7 months to treat acne and some sun damage (not severe), with great results.  I recently visited my doctor, who told me that I should discontinue use of Retin-A for at least three months before trying to conceive, as this drug can be toxic to a fetus.  I am disappointed, since this is the first time I've ever found anything that has really improved my skin condition to this degree.  I am wondering if an over-the-counter treatment, such as Alpha Hydroxy (8% of 70% solution) would be an alternative (and safe during pregnancy?), or is there another non-toxic possibility that could be considered? Thank you.

DR:

To the best of my knowledge, Retin-A itself has not caused problems, but is recommended to be avoided during pregnancy because of the risk of other members of the Vitamin A family for causing birth defects.  This same concern would apply to Retinol, etc.

Most pregnant women want to take as few chances as possible, even if the risk is low.  I'd stay away from this whole class of drugs.  Your doctor can recommend others, such as those containing erythromycin, to tide you over.

Good luck!

Dear Dr. R...
Thank you for your response.  Please clarify something for me.  In your response to my question, you advised that I "stay away from this whole class of drugs".  Were you including Alphy Hydroxy Acid (Glycolic Acid) in this class of drugs to be avoided prior and during pregnancy?  Your advice is much appreciated.  DR

No, just the retinoids.  The alpha hydroxys are OK.
