Scalp Ringworm

Scalp Ringworm

My two year old has been diagnosed with tinea capitis which is ringworm in your scalp. The only problem I'm having is that the infection has yet to clear up with medication and it's been 2 months now...nearly 3. The dosage has been changed, as nothing topical will clear the infection, but there are still no results. The bumps are now filled with puss, and her hair is thinning out. Griseofulvin is the med she's on and the only one approved by the FDA, there are others that have been successful, but her doctors are not prescribing them, they are playing with her dosage. Can long term use of this medicine be harmful??? Any clue why she is not responding, or the infection is not responding??? I hate to have her on antibiotics for so long.  Help.

Rest assured griseofulvin will clear the scalp fungus, but then it takes a long time for the antibiotic to get incorporated to the hair keratin where the fungus lives. It is safe, and extensively used.
