Scaly, Flakey , Itchy at hair line

by jen, Mar 13, 2000 12:00AM
I have red, scaly, flakey , itchy  skin at my hair line. It seems to get worse with stress. It has an extremely severe deep itch when I get stressed. When it starts to "heal" it is almost scab-like. I've tried Scalpacin, it helps a little, I've coated it with a triple-antibiotic ointment over night, that will peel off the flakeyness, but does nothing to cure.
I'm curious if this could be some kind of fungus...it seems to be spreading to the side of my face. I also have the strange habit of washing my hair right before I go to bed & sleeping on it wet. I have very thick hair that is beyond shoulder length.

Jen:

Sounds like scalp seborrhea.  Furst try Nizoral shampoo (1%, OTC) twice a week.  If that fails, ask a physician for a prescription for a topical steroid lotion, like betamethasone 0.1%

Stress is a factor, but just a secondary one.

Best.
