Seborrheic Dermatitis

Dear Doctor Rockoff,

I have some seborrheic dermatitis in these locations:

Behind the ear-Very mild kind of powdery
Occassionally at the sides of nose-pretty mild
Scalp- I have about four little red patches in different parts of the scalp with white flakes on top. They itch a little bit.

After researching the condition on the internet, I was horrified to see that its connected with HIV. I have not had any unprotected intercourse; just a few female partners using condoms of course.

What is the difference between normal seborrhea and in those with AIDS? Do you see the condition a lot in folks who don't have it? I am now very scared about the possibility of HIV.

Seborhea is a common condition that happens at all stages of life, from infants' cradle cap to old age.  There is no reason for you be concerned about HIV (unless you're ill in other ways.)  If there's otherwise no reason to be concerned about HIV, having seborrhea is of no relevance that way.

Over-the-counter dandruff shampoos containing zinc or tar are helpful.  If you need more help, a dermatologist can prescribe stronger shampoos and topical solutions.
