Skin Discoloration

Hi, my son is 11 years old and he is of Filipino decent.  He normally has a very smooth brown complexion but lately he has developed light (almost white) spots on his face.  I am concerned and I want to know what might be causing this?  Should I take him to a dermatologist or his regular pediatrician? As a point of information, he does spend a lot of time in the pool and out in the sun.

Thank you!
Heather

Hello,
From the symptoms, it can be due to pityriasis alba or pityriasis versicolor. Pityriasis versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of a yeast fungus and is found mainly on sun exposed areas. Pityriasis alba is a common hypopigmented dermatitis. Severe cases may benefit by Psoralen plus ultraviolet light A photochemotherapy (PUVA).

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
