My boyfriend has small painful scratches on his penis. We are not sure where they came from or what they are or we we should be concerned and use a condom. He has been putting neosporain on it hoping that will help, but it hasn't made a difference yet. Do you know what this could be and anything that could help? Thank you!
With regards to these painful scratches are there any associated redness or swelling in the area?
Is there any associated scaling of the affected area?
Are these itchy?
Are the scratches only limited in the shaft of the penis or do they involve the head of the penis also?
For how long has he been using neosporin on the area?
This may sound like a balanitis or contact dermatitis. If there are any discolorations, other differentials may include lichen planus. However, you have not mentioned any discolorations in the area.
Have this assessed by your urologist.A culture of skin scrapings of the involved area may be able to help ascertain the diagnosis. If the condition does not respond with the medications after continued use, you may opt to have this discontinued as this may only aggravate the condition.
Use only lose underpants of light material and try to keep the area dry and clean at all times.Refrain from any sexual activity until this has been assessed.
