Sore in front of ear that is hard and swollen

I had a small bump what I thought was some kind of pimple for a while. I finally was able to pop it a few days ago. Now it is a lot larger swollen hard and painful. There used to be just one hole and now it has two. I am curious if I need to go to the doctor or if it will just go away. Thank you for your time.

From the symptoms it sounds like a boil or an infected cyst. Boils or carbuncles are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium that causes an infection in an oil gland or hair follicle. Apply warm compresses on the boil and keep the area clean. Drainage of the boil is done only when it becomes soft and forms a head. Please keep the area clean and apply some topical antiseptics. Also wear loose-fitting cotton clothing and use an antibacterial soap or mild soap like dove. Avoid any kind of cosmetics. Topical antibiotics such as mupirocin or neomycin containing ointment are also useful. In case the symptoms persist then oral antibiotics may be needed. Consult a dermatologist in that case.
