Spitz Nevus - 20-year-old female

Spitz Nevus - 20-year-old female

Last week I had a suspicious mole removed from the back of my left ear.  It was sent to the pathologist for biopsy because it had been raised pretty significantly with discoloration (to put it into perspective, we thought it was a good sized mole).  The bump had grown out of nowhere in the matter of a few months...

Today, the dermatologist called with the results of the biopsy.  She said that it was benign and said that it was Spitz Nevus, but then informed us that Spitz Nevus was rather controversial and with consultation with other doctors she thought it was prudent that we remove the surrounding tissue.

My concern is that this could be misdiagnosed melanoma given my age and the rarity of it occuring in adults.  Another concern is that I am due to go to Africa next Wednesday and with the procedure being performed on Monday don't feel that it would be adequately healed in enough time to travel to a third world country.  The doctor concurs on that one.

So, one:  should I get this tested with an expert pathologist to seek reconfirmation of no cancer?  Skin cancer does travel in my family and I'm worried.  Two:  Should I have this removed immediately and postpone my trip or would it be okay to wait the six weeks my trip will take and have the rest of the tissue removed in August?

What are the risks either way?

Thanks!
