Spot on penis w/ discolored skin

by Rob36318, Mar 29, 2009 08:08PM
Hello, I'm 19 years old and a virgin. Within the last 1-2 months, I noticed a small brown spot on the shaft of my penis that was semi-surrounded by discolored skin. When I say "semi-surrounded," I mean that it does not necessarily appear as though the spot is the focus or epicenter of the pigmentation, but it certainly does lie within the region. Similar discoloration is also seen in smaller portions on other parts of my penis, but I always assumed these smaller areas were normal. The skin, like the spot, is a dark brown color, even though I am very much white - it almost looks as if it is bruised. The spot does NOT appear to be raised at all - it looks like a small birthmark that could be found anywhere on the body, maybe a few milimeters in diameter. I should also mention that I am circumcised and masturbate semi-frequently. The skin and spot do not itch or feel uncomfortable in any way; as far as I can tell, they are purely cosmetic. In addition, the dark patch of skin is much less visible (almost gone) when the penis is erect. Although I know a physical examination is the best diagnostic method, I would REALLY REALLY prefer NOT to see a doctor about this. So, based on the description, could you tell me what the most likely cause(s) seem like? Is there a chance this could be penile cancer? I have read that this is rare in the United States and more often seen in older, uncircumcised men, but should I be worried? Could it be damage from masturbation? Also, if you think there is something that I could maybe use to try fixing it (topical cream, antifungal pills, etc.) could you recommend it? Thanks for reading and any professional advice would be reallllllyyyyyyyyyy appreciated.

Hi,

Proper diagnosis and management is usually done after clinical examination of the spot/ discoloration. With the limited facts you have mentioned, differentials may include hyperpigmentation, or  possible fungal infection or tinea versicolor.  At your age, penile cancer is unlikely. But it is important to know other symptoms of penile cancer aside from discoloration:  non-healing growth or sore, bleeding, foul discharge, rash or difficulty in drawing back the foreskin.

Treatment usually depends on the underlying cause, in this case it is difficult to recommend without  the proper diagnosis. For proper management and to rule out other causes, have this evaluated further by your doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
