Steroid induced rosacea

by katq66, Jul 02, 2008 12:14PM
i have suffered from psoriasis my whole life, but generaly its quite mild. about 3 years ago i had a bad outbreak which was covering every part of my body. my doctor prescribed dovobet which contains a combination of calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate. i made a point of asking my doctor if it was safe to use on my face, she said yes its fine. about a month or two later the psoriasis cleared up, but i was then left with sore and lumpy red skin all over my face, which would get better for a few days when the cream was applied, this went on for another two months untill it became too painful and i asked to see a different doctor, this doctor told me to stop using the cream immediatly and perscribed antibiotics. it eventualy cleared up but now my skin seems very thin and i can see veins under my skin, its been about a year and a half and im wondering will my skin ever go back to normal? and if there is any treatments to get rid of the veins?

Hi,

First of all Welcome to the forum.

Steroids are known to cause this kind of damage. This is also known as steroid induced atrophy and is usually caused by prolonged inappropriate/incorrect usage.

The veins that you see are normally present under the skin but are invisible. Dur to steroid application, a superficial layer of the skin thins out and the veins appear.

If extensive damage has not occurred, then this may recover naturally. However, if severe you may have to visit your doctor and get help on this.

Let me know if you need more information.

Best regards

Hi,
I have had excema all my life in addition to quite bad acne at times. I have been reading that steroid creams used on the face can produce reactions like these. Unfortunately I made the mistake of using cortisone creams on my face although I haven't for about 2 years. However, for about 2 years on and off I have had these really bad rashes on my chest and face which are very red, very itchy and raised and bumpy with little pustules.
At times it has been so bad that i haven't wanted to leave the house and have not been to work etc. It is not only embarrasssing but also painful as sometimes the itching gets unbearable. I finally got to see a dermatologist about a months ago, aftern the first one tols me i was 'too clean!'. The dermotologist said that I have acne rosecea and urticaria combined, although I thought that i was having allergic reactions! The doc prescribed me some telfast antihistamines, dermol 500 and lymecycline 408mg. As yet I have seen no effect and it seems to be getting worse.
Having read on here about the steroid input I am wondering if this is the root cause.
Can anybody please help... this is affecting my life quite dramatically at the moment.
Are there any other treatments that could be pursued. I do not see the dermotologist for another 2 months.
Also, in addition to this I have always battled with facial hair although I don't use anything for this just the usual tweezers, etc. Could this have something to do with it or be linked?
Thanks
