Sudden onset of Fordyce Condition?

by seb1111, Jul 30, 2008 07:03AM
I have recently, after a bout with sinusitis, noticed many tiny white bumps on my upper lip.  These bumps initially focused on the center of my upper lip, with clusters of small bumps on the corners of my mouth.  They were also accompanied with mildly chapped lips.  I went to 2 dermatologists who said it was nothing to worry about and either sun damage (started the night of being at the beach all day) or some kind of outside irritation.  Although,  they have slowly been spreading, not getting better.  Not i have a few on my lower lip as well.  They are very small, but have become slightly noticeable on my upper lip.  I have read about Fordyce condition, but does it come suddenly like this?    Also, is it accompanied by dry lips?  I am becoming worried as for what to do.

Hi,
Fordyce spots are small (1-5mm), slightly elevated yellowish or white papules or spots that can appear on the lips and inside of the cheeks.  They may occur as a solitary lesion or more frequently in crops of about 50-100.

Fordyce spots are a variant of sebaceous glands (the glands that normally produce sebum and are usually found within hair follicles). Fordyce spots are sebaceous glands without hair follicles. They are present in 80-95% of adults.
Fordyce spots are generally harmless and do not require any treatment.

In your case,  it seems more like an allergic reaction, probably in response to the medications that you might have taken for the sinusitis. You can take anti-histamines like Cetrizine or Loratidine for the rash and apply Calamine lotion on the bumps. It should subside in 7-10 days.
