Swelling and redness on 3 y/o genitalia

My had an ear infection recently and was given an extra strength antibiotic (augmentin) Anyway last night when I put him to bed he had this red itchy rash that looked like sandpaper!  And like a weird powdery red color.  So this morning when he woke up he can running out of the restroom saying that his private was like a balloon.  His penis was also swollen looked really weird.  he's not circumcised so on the foreskin actually looked like it was blown up.  I took him in to see the pediatrician he said it was an allergic reaction to the augmentin I'm not so convinced he said give benedryl every 6 hours.  The swelling went down but the red bumps are still there he says it hurts!  

There has been NO CHANGE in soaps detergents etc.... Any thoughts????

Augmentin is an oral antibacterial combination consisting of the antibiotic amoxicillin and the β-lactamase inhibitor clavulanate potassium. Side effects may occur such as hypersensitivity reactions. This may include skin rashes, pruritus, urticaria, serum sickness-like reactions (skin rash accompanied by arthritis, arthralgia, myalgia, and frequently fever),  hypersensitivity vasculitis, and an occasional case of exfoliative dermatitis. Continue with the antihistamine or benadryl and if it persists, it would be best to have this evaluated further by your doctor or discontinue the drug. It is important that your son avoid scratching the lesion to avoid secondary infection.
