Swelling around eyes; face

by jarnold824, Feb 21, 2006 12:00AM
We are on Turks and Caicos for vacation with our children, including our 9 year old son.  We have vacationed in the Carribean before without incident.  Our son's face got quite sunburned on Sunday.  I put some soother on his face Monday morning.  He went out on a fishing trip on Monday, and unfortunately, did not put any sunblock on his face, but he wore a sun visor for, probably, half of the trip.   Monday fishing trip and evening activities went without incident.  His face did appear more sunburned.  I put some more soother on his face.

This morning, he awoke, and 1 eye is nearly swelled shut; the other is swollen as well.  His face looks about as red as it did yesterday.  He isn't complaining of any other symptoms though he's uncomfortable and not as active as usual.  I don't see any rash.  He's not eaten any shellfish.  He takes Concerta for ADD and is allergic to cats.  Not other known allergies.

We've given him Benedryl and he's keeping a cold compress on the worst eye.  Can you suggest a diagnosis?  Treatment?  We may call on a doctor here.  It would be helpful to have some ideas.

Can you suggest a diagnosis

Sounds like sunburn to me.  Sunburn produces inflammation, and one sign of that is swelling.  Once you're burned, it doesn't much matter what you put on, soothing or otherwise.  I advise cool compresses, Tylenol, and sun avoidance until he feels better.

Best.

One summer while on vacation, I spent an entire afternoon swimming and boating on a lake. Not a smart move for a fair-skinned child. Later in the day, I had a little redness on my face but nothing alarming. When I awoke the next morning, my face was very red and the skin around my eyes was so swollen I couldn't open my eyes at all! It was definitely from the sunburn.
