The reason I know about vitamin E is that I used it on my scar first, believing that it would help and got a terrible rash that caused the scar area to be irritated and swell.  I went to my dermatologist who told me it was a myth about using vitamin e for an actual scar.  (who knew).  I looked into it more myself and found many studies and papers from dermatologists that totally discourage the use of vitamin E for scars.
Here is a conclusion from a published study titled The effects of topical vitamin E on the cosmetic appearance of scars.University of Miami Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, Miami, Florida, USA.:  "CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that there is no benefit to the cosmetic outcome of scars by applying vitamin E after skin surgery and that the application of topical vitamin E may actually be detrimental to the cosmetic appearance of a scar. In 90% of the cases in this study, topical vitamin E either had no effect on, or actually worsened, the cosmetic appearance of scars. Of the patients studied, 33% developed a contact dermatitis to the vitamin E. Therefore we conclude that use of topical vitamin E on surgical wounds should be discouraged."
I also researched on dermatology times...here is the general doctor advise:

"Keeping the body's natural healing ability in mind, dermatologists should know that some scar therapies are a waste of time and money. Breaking vitamin E capsules on scars to minimize their appearance, for example, has shown no benefit in studies and can cause allergic reactions, according to Dr. Spencer (Baumann LS, Spencer JM. Dermatol Surg. 1999;25:827). Topical onion extract therapy (Mederma, Merz Pharmaceuticals) has failed, for the most part, to show benefit in studies as well, he adds.

"Studies show that it does not do anything more than the Vaseline that it is dissolved in," he says (Chung VQ et al. Dermatol Surg. 2006:32:193-198).

I am just trying to help people from going though what I did just because I did not know vitamin E was inneffective and worse, could cause my scar to become worse off.

Dr. Spencer says he uses silicone gel sheeting to treat hypertrophic scars, because in 10 years of using it, the sheeting has worked to shrink the scars.

Studies also show benefit from using silicone sheeting for preventing and treating hypertrophic scars and keloids, he says (Berman B et al. Dermatol Surg. 2007;33(11):1291-1303).

There are a few brands..only 2 in stores.  The one I mention previously was the one recommended by my dermatologist and that I have used.  I do not work for the company that makes this item, I am just a very happy customer relieved to find a therapy that works and is affordable. :)  ~ Susan

Vitamin E works for some people, so I won't advise against it, though for many does little to nothing. And there is no nothing that says ScarAway actually works. If you work for this company, stop trying to advertise it. All the product is, is a silicone sheet. Many other brands sell the exact same product, and they do little for scars. How a scar will look mostly depends on the patients body and how it heals.

Vitamin E does not help reduce scars.  Many studies have bee done on topical vitamin, that showed no improvement in the appearance of scar, and in manym, the vitamin e made ascars WORSE than untreated due to irritation and/or contact dermatitis.  There are a few clinically proven scar reduction methods.  Many involve lasers or iunjection. One clinicaly proven treatment that is available OTC is ScarAway.  It is available as a patch or strip and safely reduces scars. For facial scars like acne, use ScarAway Serum.  Very effective, although the patches (often referred to as silicone scar sheets) are most effective so use them when feasible, and serum only when you cannot use the strip in the area.

Hi,
A scar is an overgrowth of fibrous tissue and blood vessels that form as a result of injury, a cut or a burn.
Sometimes surgery may be required to improve the scar. In this case, the surgeon will remove excess scar tissue, and reposition the incision so that it heals in a less visible pattern. This scar removal surgery is usually done under local or general anesthesia in the doctor's office.
Vit E creams are supposed to lighten scars, so you could apply them directly on the scar, but it may take e long time for results to show, if at all.
Scars, especially old scars, may be treated with PhotoDerm, a non-invasive, laser-like device that emits an intense flash of light that works directly on the scar by reducing the blood vessels present in the scar tissue.
