Topical Steroids

I recently had a sever case of contact dermatitis on my face from either a moisturizer or BP, haven't been able to pinpoint what caused it. My derm wrote me for a prescription for desonide cream and it cleared up in a few days. I was told to continue to use the cream as it is very safe for usage on the face. I applied the cream twice a day for a little over a month until I started doing research on topical steroids.

So,  i've read that you should not use a topical steroid for more than 2 weeks? I'm a bit concerned now and have noticed changes in my appearance since stopping it several months back. Can such a cream have a morphing effect on your face? I know that sounds silly but I haven't been comfortable with my apperance since. Looking back on previous prescriptions my derm prescribed Elocon as well last year. I was so naive, thought I was simply using a soothing cream to relieve the discomfort on my face, not a steroid!!!!

Should I be concerned at all about such short-term usage of either product?

Lastly, can you recommend a moisturizer/soap other than dove fragrance free and lubriderm that will most likely not cause an allergic reaction or breakouts? I've used both in the past unsuccesfully. Is it wise just to skip moisturizing or will that make matters worse? My derm recommended straight vaseline but it makes my face really glossy.

thanks
james

No, you needn't be concerned.  Desonide is a weak steroid, to which the 2-week restriction does not apply,  Elocon is OK too.  Just use the cream when you need it and stop when you don't, and check in with your dermatologist from time to time.
Take care.

You don't get a second bite of the cherry at this forum. The doc quite clearly said you can use desonide and the two weekly advice you got, does not apply. Go for it and be happy.
