Uncontrollable itching... Please help

I've had an itchy patch of skin located in my inner thigh. It started years ago as a small itchy area and now has grown to an area the size of my hand. It seems the more i scratched the more it seemed to "grow" but very gradually. It is red and scaly. It itches uncontrollably to the point where i cause scabs by constant scratching. I did go to a dermatologist who tested for fungus, bacteria, etc which came back negative. She prescribed Cutivate cream (corticosteroid) which does reduce all the inflammation but the itching remains. If I continue to use the cream daily it has gone away but eventually itching begins, I scratch, skin begins to thicken and is very dry and scaly. I know I can use the cream but I'm wondering what this could be... just some sort of dermatitis? The dermatologist never really told me what this could be only that the cream would work, etc.  Any insight/advice welcomed. :o)

Hi

This sounds like spongiotic dermatitis or an eczema. A fungal infection may still be considered here. What test was done to check if this is a fungal infection? I suggest that you continue with the medications the doctor gave you and inform your doctor if you plan to stop the medication. Steroids should only be taken for a limited time as this may have certain side effects. Have you tried using antifungal medications for this?
