Unique Hair Growth on Scalp

by Silver_Surfer, Nov 23, 2008 11:40AM
Hello.
My question regards hair growth on the head.  The hair near my crown grows in kind of a weird way.  There's a section that lays flat against my scalp (near the crown area).  Instead of growing forward toward the front of my head, the hair kind of swings to the right around my crown and lays flat.  If I could describe it, it's like a "Y" where the hair growth spits.  When I was much younger (in my teens), I used to have my hair long, and I never noticed it.  But since I've started getting my hair cut short, it's more prominent.  (I first noticed it when I was 19.  I'm 29 now).  Anyway, I've quite self conscious about it because where it splits into a "Y", there's a small section where hair doesn't grow.  At first I assumed I was just losing my hair, but it hasn’t change since I first noticed it 10 years ago.  (I’m starting to think I’ve always had it -- maybe something genetic?)  Anyway, I'm looking for some information that I'm not alone with this situation.  I've been told that it's a kind of cowlick that lays flat.  But I’ve never heard of that before or seen it in anyone else.  Any information would be great.
Thanks.

It sounds to me as though you just have a variant of the way hair grows.  It doesn't sound like a disease or a syndrome.  There is most likely nothing to be done about it, other than to wear you hair in a way that won't make you self-conscious.  By all means show it to a skin doctor in person to get a definitive opinion, but it's unlikely that you will be advised to do anything--or that you have a specific problem.

Beat.
