Unusual Rash

Hi,

My rash appeared 4 days ago after being ill. The rash appeared not long after I began taking Amoxicillin however I have always taken Amoxicillin with no problems at all (since Nov. I have throat flairups, the doctors are not sure what is causing it. My lymph nodes swell, tonsils are infected, fever, white on my tongue, etc however I always test negative for mono and strep). Just in case, I was taken off the Amoxicillin but the rash keeps increasing. The rash started as small tiny red dots across my abdomen and has spread. It is profuse on my knees, lower back, stomach, and very bad on my arms. The tiny red spots grew larger to now where on my arms it's a solid red mass, in other spots they almost look like rings as you can see in the photo. The skin is slightly raised, somewhat itches, and feels like a sunburn that burns and is hot to the touch. I've noticed a sensitivity in my finger tips to hot and cold. I am on steroids to shrink my tonsils, benadryl, and Z-pac. I have never had this rash before. I am fair skinned and 20 years old. I do not have insurance and it's not easy to find a doctor who will take the time to help me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi, did you ever find out what was causing this rash and how long did it take to finally disappear.  I have the same problem and no doctor seems to know what it is or what to do.  Many thanks M

Hi, This ssems to be an allergic reaction to the drug in all probability. This group of drugs is known to cause them.
Even after stopping the drug, until it is eliminated from the body it can keep triggering off your immune system and causing the rash to appear.
In a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals, such as histamines. This causes itching, swelling, mucus production, muscle spasms, hives, rashes, and other symptoms, which vary from person to person.
Also a person can become allergic to something that was well tolerated before. It is genetically determined, so the exact reason why this happens is not known.
You can take oral anti-histamines and applly calamine lotion. In severe cases a mild Corticosteroid ointment can be used.
If it worsens or you develop a fever please do visit a doctor immediately.

Some parts of the rash have gone down but remain red while new spots keep showing up. I'm not asking for a definitive answer, just ideas would help. I'd really appreciate it!
