Unusual rashes

by mandtsmom, Oct 12, 2003 12:00AM
My daughter, age 7, had a rash that began in her groin area 4 weeks ago. The rash consisted of lots of tiny bumps and was very itchy. She also had some round spots on her hips. After a DR. visit, we were refered to a dermatologists. Our visit was 2 weeks after the initial rash started. By this time she had started peeling on her hands and feet. She also had some small rough patches of skin on her inner thighs and her shoulder. The dermatologist diagnosed pityrias rosea. She said that the other patches were dry skin and the peeling hands and feet were because of sweaty hands and feet. It has been 4 weeks since this began and her hands and feet are still peeling. The spots on her hips that looked like the pictures of the pityrias rosea have healed and are now just white spots. But she keeps getting new rashes that come and go. She now has a rash on her shoulder that looks a little like hives but has a blister in the center of it. She also developed a bad case of dandruff. All of this has gone on just in the last 4 weeks. She has never had any skin issues before. She has an underlying health condition, cystic fibrosis, but has not had any change in medicine. I am worried that there is more going on than just the pityrias rosea and that maybe this is indicating some underlying problem. We plan to see another dermatologist but would be interested to know what you think could be the possible cause of all these different rashes. Are they all related? Could there be something systemic going on? All of the rashes looked different but appeared within a few days of each other. Please help.

The course you describe is not compatible with pityriasis rosea, although it may have looked like that to begin with.

Some viral rashes result in peeling of the skin on the palms and soles, so that's a possibility.  I'm not sure, however, how to interpret the persistence of both new areas and older white spots.

I suspect that all this will turn out to be something in the eczema family (that can affect hands and feet too.)  It doesn't sound related to cystic fibrosis, or like anything particularly serious.

Still, you are doing the right thing by seeing a dermatologist, who I'm sure will be able to set you straight.

Best.

Hi,

Are there any elements in daily life that will cause more acne (e.g. stress, oily foods) and are there any things you can do or foods you can eat to reduce acne? (e.g. more vegetables, etc.)

Thanks,
Eric
