Very Dry Skin

I have never had a skin condition until now. I'm a 34 year old female with two kids.  Since my kids I will admit that my face has not been great, but now it is out of control. My face is very dry, thick, ichy and raised.  It is from my cheek bones to my neck on both sides and chin.  I feel as if I have a mask on.  I have not changed anything except I now take synthroid 75mcg.  I wash my face with the same stuff I always have, Cetaphille and tone with Witch Hazel then a light moisterizer once a day.  Not sure what to do?

Hi,

Selenium is a mineral which has been used as a supplement to help improve thyroid and other metabolic problems. Some studies have shown that selenium may help delay the risk of heart disease. Also ,it has been shown to help decrease the risk of infections.

Fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have been well studied and several studies have shown that they help rebuild tissues, improve circulation and prevent inflammatory processes that may be associated with cardiac disease and cancer.

In your case, a referral to a dermatologist may be necessary so  you may be guided with regards to the skin conditions that may be brought about by your thyroid problem.Avoid the Witch Hazel and observe if the dryness persists.

I had an appointment with my Thyroid Dr. yesterday.  She said my TSH is fine (1.25).  This is the first time I have had a normal TSH in a long time.  It is usually 11.6.  She suggested that I see a Dermatologist and an Allergist???  I made appointments with both because I need this problem fixed.  I found out yesterday that I have a very low Vitamin D and Calcium.  I now take Vitamin D 50,000IU for 12 weeks, Selenium 100 mg and Fish Oil 1000 mg on top of a multi.  Not sure what the Selenium and Fish Oil is for?  As for my face, I have eliminated the Witch Hazel.  It just seemed to dry my face more.  I will see the Dermatologist in two weeks.

Thanks for the info, I will update after my appointments.

Hi,

I suggest that you have this checked by your internist.I do not think this is a side effect of the medication however, it may be due to your underlying thyroid problem
( hypothyroid problem?).

Hypothyroidism may present with extremely dry skin. You may discuss this with your physician since you may need to have your medications assessed and the dose modified. Apply light and bland cream over the area to moisturize it. The dryness may initiate an itch scratch cycle. This may lead to a dermatitis or eczema in some areas.

Do keep us posted regarding physician's advice.
