Want to become a dermatologist

by Derma12, Oct 27, 2009 11:21PM
Hi, I don't know if I am on the right spot to ask this question, but I wanted to get some help from the professional.... I am currently B.S. Student at Purdue University, graduating in May 2010. I have been experiencing severe skin break out problems for the past 6 months, and I can't seem to find the cure or anything to help my skin... it has became my obsession and the passion to figure out the bottom of the problem why this is happening to my face... Since I am a B.S. undergraduate student, I don't have to take advanced Biology or the chemistry, but I am finally taking my basic biology class this semester, and it has became quite interesting to me, and quite fascinating.....since I have been researching about my skin conditions, this basic biology class helped me understanding somewhat better with many of the special(?) terminologies that either in science or medical field people use...I came across the "demodex mites" and I really like to learn and study more about skin to understand….my personal interest to help my own skin condition brought me to my new passion to consider changing my career path as a dermatologist. I have been trying to see the dermatologist for several weeks, but the wait list goes on until Jan 2010. I really would like to turn my personal problems into pursuing new career to study more about it, use my new passion to learn more about the skin conditions to help myself and further, help others with problems. Having a meaning career such as a doctor to help people would bring me tremendous self-satisfaction in life as well..... My personal interests caused by my own problems would make me a perfect candidate to become a good dermatologist, but I don't know first thing about this.... can somebody help me what I need to do? Or how I should approach my new goal and dream?? Please help.... since I will have 4-year B.S. degree in May 2010, do I still need to go to 7-8 years of medical school that everyone talks about? Does it matter which school I attend? (I mean, the prestige college is better than cheap community college?) I may sound ignorant, but I would like to take this seriously for a life decision moment for the rest of my life....Can somebody please guide me, point me into the right direction???
