Waxy spot on scalp

I HOPE you can help me. I have a greasy, waxy patch on one area of my scalp which I have had for over 2 years now. I have tried dozens of shampoos, vinegars rinses, bicarb, dishwashing liquid, changing pillowcases and even completely changing my hair colour. Nothing helps, it is so infuriating I am an inch away from shaving my head and buying a wig collection - seriously! I have searched this online and there are literally hundreds of posts with no answer! I have asked a few doctors but am too embarrassed to bring it up again as they look at me like I am either insane or like 'so what' but it really effects my appearance, particualry at work as I think I look permanently dirty. HELP!

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I HOLD NO CERTIFICATIONS FOR COSMETOLOGY NOR HAVE I WORKED IN THAT FIELD. THIS INFORMATION IS NOT INTENDED TO TREAT, CURE OR DIAGNOSE ANY DISEASE. I’M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT MAY HAPPEN AS A R  LOLESULT OF TAKING TAKE MY ADVICE AS CONING FROM “JUST SOME GUY” TALKING ABOUT ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE.

THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN COMPILED BY MYSELF OVER THE COURSE OF ROUGHLY 6 MONTHS. I’M NOT GOING TO BE DESCRIBING MY SYMPTOMS,AND EXPERIANCED THEY ARE YOURS.

NEVERTHELESS HERE IS A “HIGHLIGHT” OF MY EXPERIENCE- THIS WILL CERTAINLY LET YOU KNOW I’M PART OF THE “CLUB.”

AS I WAS FIGURING EVERYTHING OUT/TRIAL & ERROR I WAS BRIEFLY HOUSED IN NYC’S FAMOUS BELVUE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL. I HAD COME IN WITH CHEST TIGHTNESS

WITH MY NEVK BEING SCRAPED UP FROM A RAZOR AND “RAMBLING” ABOUT “HAIR UNDER MY SCALP.  I WAS “VOLUNTARILY” (TO PREVENT INVOLUNTARY i.e. COERCION AND INTIMIDATION)   (COMMITTED FOR BEING “PSYCHOTIC. I MADE A STUPID BUT PURPOSELY NON THREATENING COMMENT.”

(Caps got annoying,,for all of us I’m sure)!, just wanted to use them for the “disclaimer”)
Anyway I was having chest tightness (anxiety), this was from my overall level of  angst being through the roof. The fact is when you are being inadvertently  “gaslit” by literally everyone you can certainly question your sanity, you think  “maybe I really am ‘crazy,” you’re not.

Ok so what is it?

OK SO HERE IS HOW TO FIX IT:

It is a tangle of VERY VERY fine “vellus hairs.” They have fused/keratonized over many, maybe most of your life.
Did you ever have dreads?
Super tight braids?
A tangle of some sort that was so tight it just kinda became “part of your scalp,” it was tied down in the back, top, everywhere. It made it so tight I couldn’t even tell that it was there, my hair was (I don’t know how) growing through it.

When I shaved it off, it extremely hard to start the buzzer. When I thought it was done I would discover an other layer like a week later . The hairs looked like they were my “scalp” because the invisible, Vellus hairs intertwined and just kinda held everything in place, the whole thing was very close to flesh tone.

Mine started off with what must have been 20+ years of tangle. The hair tied itself down to my scalp in an in credibly intricate way. Like two spirals If you take a tweezer and grab some of does it move around like a weird solid but not go anywhere?

So essentially this is your hair with a decades old literal network of Vellus hairs holding  them together. The hairs are super soft and fine so they just kinda stay in place. In the places they are woven down side by side they look like a solid wax.

Ok so HERE is how to fix it.  So here is what you need to get all off!

• NAIR (the magic ingredient!) the “face” variety is more gentle on your skin, you can try different depilatories if you wish, but this is what I used.

• A HIGH QUALITY BUZZER, the “Whal Peanut,” or better. We want it sharp and precise, it’s just better this way,

• A HIGH QUALITY ELECTRIC RAZOR, the kind with a screen (not the circles or whatever) I like Braun.

• DISPOSABLE RAZOR W/plenty of extra blades. The Gillette “Fusion Sensitive” was ideal for me. You want everything to be as
non irritating as possible.

• SHAVING CREAM

• VASOLINE (to provides lunrication for getting out knots)

• CORTISONE CREAM(make sure to use very little, if you have/get strong Rx cream and you put on too much it can literally make you jittery/heart race. Like everything else I learned “the hard way.” In that case I used soap and water, washed  it off and took a Klonipin or Xanax (get some).

• A “TWEEZER MAN” SLANTED TWEEZER (keep it clean with Alcohol so it grabs better)

• A “TWEEZERMAN” pointed tweezer, I really liked the (unusually shaped) “splinter model.”

• “TEND SKIN” you will be using this to remove the ingrown hairs on the margin.

First, if you haven’t you need to shave your head, just do it. The good news is  that the “bald spots” will be revealed as exactly what they are- hair. It’s all hair.

OK, because you are dealing with hair, and pretty much only hair you will be dissolving it with -NAIR- this will be a wonderful moment. You should work from the edges up, this way you won’t mess up the “ballance.”

The balance is very important if it is super tight, that’s how mine “plastisized,” (seems like a good name) it will pull on one side and maybe even feel scary on your neck.  Remember you may have slot of ingrown (white) hairs around your neck, expose and get rid of these with the Nair and razors. If you have these they came from tiny hairs collecting over the years, they traveled down your body with sweat/gravity and got into different creases and seem to have hardened with something. That’s what I came up with.

If they are around your neck/shoulders it is way more important than your head. Slowly get rid of it, get help from somebody who has a better feel for this type of stuff if you don’t get it. Remove keep it balanced, this includes the back. DO THIS SLOWLY! ANYTIME I WENT TO FAST/CARELESS (mostly during trial and error) something put pressure around my neck and I (nearly) panicked. Keep your high quality, buzzer, shaver and  blades at the ready.

These hairs are acseoerstr issue but if the overgrowth/knowingness got to this level on your head it is probably doing stuff elsewhere. Put a small amount of Nair on your chest (sweat runs down your chest). If there are a lot GET HELP from a Dr. take video etc.

The ingrown hairs around your neck is one of the places where the electric razor will help out. If it got this tight around your head for the tight spouse then use the electric razor to slow log and carefully even it out, If this is your case  it will take practice.

So for your head, a put some Nair in the small area you are ready to talkie.,work  in small patches from the margins up. For example 2 inches up left side burns then 2 inches right sideburn.

The Nair will immediately expose and remove hairs, follow the instructions, move with a hot towel etc. You will then see the hair get kinda “crisp” (I hate that word) this will just keep happening.

So as the hair hardens/gets crispy or whatever this is where your choice of razors comes in.  Just keep Naring and removing, slowly,

Use the other stuff as you see fit. The powder is to put all over yourself if it gets tight around your neck while wet, it will loosen it a bit. Again  because this comes from hair that got tight that didn’t know about, the ingrown (mine were thick and white) are prob part of it.

Remember, your scalp has been covered for a long, maybe very long time. Get it checked by a Dermatologist, oh avd here is a tip. Just show the doctor(s) your symptoms, let them figure it out. Don’t mention the waxy feeling, they are wearing gloves and it will just add to their BS.

Hope this helped. Good Luck!

SOLUTION
Guys, I literally never respond to forums like this, but I have to share. This strange phenomenon happened to me around a decade ago (suddenly just had this random, waxy, greasy crown and no matter how much I washed I could not get rid of it, I had it for maybe a week or two at the time.) I can't remember what I did back then, but it didn't come back UNTIL late last week. A couple of interesting things: I have a sensitive scalp in general, which only seemed to only develop over the past few years, so now I use sulphate free shampoo to minimise hair shedding/flaking from irritation and this seems to keep it in check for the most part.

Last week I got really sick with strep throat, so was on Amoxicilan antibiotics. I also had run out of my sulphate free shampoo, so used men's head and shoulders that was just randomly in our shower. Head and shoulders always makes my hair go waxy and gross, so I never use it normally. I thought my hair was oily and waxy due to this, but then it literally never went away, over a week later I still had that same waxy, oily crown no matter how much I washed, used apple cider vinegar, sulphate free shampoo, etc.

UNTIL I bought Selsun Selenium Sulfide 2.5%. I remembered when I had moved to Thailand and the hard water and all the chemicals irritated my scalp, I would use this on and off and it was good for dandrum and dermatitis etc, and quite drying of the scalp, so thought I'd give it a go and by following instructions to a tee on the bottle, my hair is TOTALLY back to normal. No more weird waxy oily crown, straight after stepping out of the shower. I washed my hair three times this morning without it, and still oily. Then I just tried the Selsun this evening for the first time, and bam, back to normal. I also did a final rinse through before stepping out of shower with apple cider vinegar as an extra step, but I am not even sure it's necessary with this stuff.  You just have to follow the instructions. I.e. shake bottle, lather, leave for 2-3 mins, rinse, repeat.

FYI. Selsun description: a medicated shampoo used to treat dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis (a greasy, crusting, itching scalp caused by excess oil). But don't get Selsun Blue, get the stronger, 2.5% stuff if you can get your hands on it. In thailand they sell it in supermarkets OTC.

So my deductions would suggest that it's either some form of dermatitis, like other posters have suggested, sending your oil/sebum glands into overdrive (could the fact I ran out of my regular shampoo, hence used head and shoulders) have caused this to kick off? OR it's the antibiotics I'm taking, causing some kind of yeast overgrowth in the scalp. I read others were also on antibiotics when this happened to them.
But Selsun is the trick, i'm so relieved it's gone and I can wear my hair down again! . Goodluck! :)

I noticed you said the waxy stuff was sebum and yeasts or fungus metabolize the sebum creating inflammation but you said you didn't know what caused the inflammation. When I saw "yeasts" and "fungus" in your post I immediatedly thought "SUGAR". I have had a problem with waxy head and yeast/fungus for years and had no idea why and it seems to become exacerbated when I have more sugar in my diet. I went on the Atkins diet about two years ago and my yeast/fungus and waxy spot cleared up. I have been off of the diet for over a year now and the yeast/fungus and waxy spot are back. I used to think it could be milk, wheat and sugar combined but I have since taken everything out of my diet except sugar and it remains. When I don't eat the sugar it goes away or is not as bad. As for getting rid of it....I would say look at your diet and go from there.

Thank you! Most concise analyzation of the problem I've read in the TWO AND A HALF YEARS I've been dealing with the problem! I have tried it all but not as methodically as you' ve suggested. Even tried Goo Gone! I know this is an old post, but just wanted you to know your effort in posting is appreciated. I'm wondering if you still have this grunge conquered.

Sorry, I should have included this in my prior post.  Vinegar is fine but only partially helps the problem.  It is anti fungal because of its low pH, acetic acid.  Use hot tub pH strips to compare apple cider to white vinegar which brings me to my next point.  Vinegar; acetic acid; is a natural defoliant of skin cells which part of the waxy stuff is composed of.  I prefer to go heavy into battle and lighten up during sleep.  I just did a Go-Jo saturation for 30 minutes and no wax left.  Then a little touchup on sore spots with 10% hydrocortisone cream.  Scalp is feeling soothed.
Waxy is not the problem, it armor plates your scalp so nothing else gets through.  Inflammation stimulates the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum.  First, eliminate the sebum/dead skin cells with vinegar or salicylic acid shamoo, and then coal tar or Go-Jo hand cleaner cream (NAPA) and leave it on for 30 minutes working it around, rinse, then mild shampoo; NutraGena(sp), baby shampoo;  rinse, then hydrocortisone 10% cream on the open descaled sore spots and work it in.  Now it can get into your scalp and begin to lessen the inflammation which is the root cause.  If a shampoo or conditioner or anything else causes your scalp to suddenly get worse or stop improving give it to that neighbor or coworker you don't like.  Seriously, once you begin to get results go mild or infrequent with shampoos.  Remember it is about inflammation.  Something is pissing off your scalp; sweating, hot tubs, hats, the sun, fancy shampoos with lots of stuff in them, conditioners also.  Shorter hair, some sun is all good.  Bad stuff only grows in the dark.  Open and airy is always good for scalps and life.

The waxy stuff is sebum. Yeasts or fungus metabolize the sebum creating inflammation.  Inflammation increases sebum formation.  Vicious cycle. Detergents and coal tar work to remove the sebum, but do little for the inflammation. Hydrocortisone cream used intermittently can work on the inflammation. I'm trying Go-Jo mechanic hand washing cream and feel it works better. It is for removing heavy grease from the hands. Mechanics use it many times daily. Wax is a form of heavy grease.  Leave it on and work it in, rinse and finish with the mildest shampoo you can find. Something is causing the inflammation the starts this spiral.  Shampoos, conditioners, scratching, excess sweating, who knows.  Change what you use, if it gets worse change again.  Go mild.  Dermititis means inflamed skin.  Try to figure out what is causing the underlying inflammation.  It takes awhile to get better and will probably return if the skin gets inflamed again.  Go mild.

I suffered from a persistent, waxy build up on my scalp for some years. It got so bad a couple of years ago that I just couldn't clean it from my scalp. It was particularly bad above my ears. I would scratch my scalp and be left with a thick, greasy wax that was a white/yellow colour under my nail. It was horrible. It made my hair look terrible - lank and greasy even when it was freshly washed. I tried natural remedies which I picked up from forums such as this, including washing my hair with vinegar, bicarbonate soda powder mixed with Johnson's baby shampoo, and lemon juice. This gave me some temporary relief but I smelt like a fish and chip shop! I was at my wits endand was just about to spend a significant amount of money visiting a private dermatologist when I walked into a pharmacy and noticed a shelf of 'medicated' shampoos. By this point I had worked out from the internet that I was probably suffering from seborrheic dermatitis. I bought every medicated shampoo for oily dandruff on that shelf and alternated them every day, massaging thoroughly into the scalp and sometimes doing two lots (I have to wash my hair every day). I have been able to control the condition ever since. My hair is a lot better than it used to be - not perfect but a LOT better. The ones I buy are:

Alphosyl
Oilatum
Ceanel
Polytar

Discovering these shampoos changed my life overnight. They can dry your hair out so use a good conditioner on the tips. I wish I had found out how to treat this problem earlier as I suffered for years, totally baffled about what I was suffering from and how to treat it. This is why I am posting this information now on any forum where people are talking about 'waxy dandruff'.

This just happened to me today...actually overnight.  At first I thought I possibly didn't rinse out shampoo or something. Had not used any other hair products like hair spray or volume booster...nothing. After shampooing, rinsing & drying agan, it was still there!! I am 65 years old, and it has been very hot & humid in Ill. the last few days. Out of boredom I googled "sticky spot on scalp" and low and behold I see others have experiended this  wierd problem. I amgoing out to buy a fresh bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar & either Neutrogen T-Gel or Head & Shoulder. Since this is the first day, hoping to nip in the bud.  Thank goodness people share experiences :)

I have the same problem and I've tried everything to get rid of it! I shower daily , used the vinegar-water solutions, massaging my scalp, nothing worked. then I tried something else, reallyyyy easy and works instantly! just bring one of the combs with really close teeth, after applying shampoo to your hair, while it still on, comb the spots with the sticky oily stuff, comb it all the way down , and it will go away instantly! just one thing, it may come back a few months later, but you can use the same method and get rid of it the same day :) hope this helps

I have found the solution! I tried vinegar.. Didnt work! It got a lot of the sticky weird stuff out but some was still there! today i was thinking, animal rescuers use Dawn dishwashing soap to remove oil from animal fur, why not try it on my hair? I did and IT WORKED!
Heres how i did it:
1) wash my scalp with some dish soap and rinse
2) use my normal shampoo and wash as normal
3) condition, this time instead of just conditioning the ends, i also put conditioner on the top where i had just used the dawn.

When my hair dried i noticed that i no longer had any waxy, sticky stuff in my hair! Im sooooo happy (:

Thanks. I will give it a good go, I had rinsed with vinegar before but never left it in my hair.  There are so many other posts on this website from people with the same porblem - the most popular treatment seems to be Suave shampoo and brown listerine so I will try that if the vinegar thing doesn't work...would love to know WHY tho!!!!

I am an 18 year old female that was having the waxy hair crown problem. This problem just arose for me about a week and a half ago. I had no idea why my hair felt to waxy and why everything I had tried was not fixing it. I kept thinking I was over conditioning so I then stopped using conditioner as I washed my hair every night. As I'd wake up in the morning I still had the waxy problem so then I tired blow drying my hair every time after I got out the shower yet the problem was still there. It wasn't until today that I started to google this problem only to find that no one had a solution. My boyfriend explained to me that every time he had dandruff he would wash his hair with APPLE CIDER VINEGAR which he called "A miracle in a bottle!" He suggested that I try using it and so I did. The waxy junk came out with such ease. All you need to do it buy one bottle and massage it all throughout your DRY hair. LET IT SIT FOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE WASHING! After doing that take your shampoo of choice and wash the vinegar out of your hair and then wash it one more time with your shampoo of choice. I used Head & Shoulders. I hope that this works for anyone who tires it because it really did work for me. The only down side to using apple cider vinegar is that it does stink but with just a few washes your hair will eventually lose the smell! ENJOY! & GOOD LUCK!

thank you Casey...I am trying it now......I've been through every remedy: antibiotics, topical antibiotic, Selsun Blue, tea tree oil shampoo & conditioner (I DON'T condition scalp), steroid topical, one of the Rx "zole shampoos anti-fungal.....unfortunately, my waxy spots irritate the scalp to the point that I get sore spots.  I have always been a daily shampooer, so no hygiene issues there.  Ok, here we go with the apple cider vinegar, full strength, or dilute ?  I am 64 so nothing is related to hormones.
