What's Wrong with my bruise?

by carol199, Jul 11, 2008 06:29PM
Yesterday I found a light brown spot on my face, it was very small and didn't protrude from my skin. I scratched at it for a long time. I thought it might have been the beginning of a mole...

After I scratched at it, the area around it (4mm) turned a darker shade than the rest of the skin and hurt a tiny bit. Today when I woke up I found that the area had darkened and is now a dark red/brown-ish color. I am wondering if this is a bruise or is it the mole becoming bigger? Is this permenant or not? and also, if it is permenant, are there ways to get rid of it?

Hi,
THis is most probably the bruising caused by the forceful scratching which might have caused the superficial blood vessels( capillaries)  in the skin to break and thus has led to the to seepage of blood into the surrounding tissue

Usually as time progresses, blood may escape and seep into the surrounding tissues even when the capillaries are being repaired, causing the bruise to darken and spread.

During about the next two weeks, the bruise color changes to a dark red then to purple, black, or blue, eventually fading to yellow and disappearing as healing progresses. Some of these color changes are related to the breakdown of the hemoglobin in the escaped red blood cells.

Normally, light bruises heal nearly completely on average in two weeks. If there is pain then NSAID's can be used, otherwise no treatment is required as it will resolve on its own.
