Which Products to Use With Retin-A

Which Products to Use With Retin-A

Hello Dr. Rockoff,

I am a 35 year old woman with a long history of cystic acne as well as dry and very sensitive skin. My dermatologist just wrote me a prescription for Retin-A (cream 0.5%) and I am concerned about the attendant irritation. Between my sensitive skin and the cold, dry winter air, I am almost positive that the Retin-A will cause irritation and peeling. Can you recommend any products (or a skincare regimen) that will either help to mitigate these effects or at least not exacerbate them? I know I will need at least a moisturizer and sun protection product (either separate or combination) and am willing to incorporate just about anything else into my skincare regimen that might help. I have used Cetaphil cleanser for a facial wash for years... but I would be willing to switch products here too if it would help.

I have heard that products containing copper peptides have been shown to aid in skin healing. Do you think a copper peptide product would help? If so, are there any products you might recommend or any ways to spot good quality products?

Lastly, while I am willing to splurge here to make sure the Retin-A treatment side-effects are kept to a minimum (and help my skin look it's best) money is an issue. I would be particularly grateful for any "cost-effective" solutions you might have.

Thank you,
N-

Does anyone have a recommendation? It need not be Dr. Rockoff.

Also, I understand that you might not want to be seen as endorsing specific products. While specific recommendations would be easier, I would be happy with a more general type of recommendation. My derm just seemed to want to sell me her 'in-house' brand and, frankly, I can't afford it...at least not in the long-term.

This might be silly, but I am waiting to start my course because I want to be prepared to deal with the (inevitable and at least temporarily horrific) fall-out. I know that sounds dramatic but my face gets red and peels with only the slightest provocation. Retin-A is sure to cause some serious irritation.

Thank you
