White Spots on Skin

My daughter is 15.She has white splotches on her neck lower back and shoulders. Sometimes they tan sometimes not. She's only had them a couple of years. She is very embarrassed by this. What I would like to know is.What could this be? Is they're any over the counter anti fungle cream or soap that may help?

Pam:

Your daughter probably has a superficial fungus infection called tinea versicolor.  It isn't either contagious or permanent.

Suggestion: try having her apply the nonprescription antifungal cream ketoconazole or clotrimazole twice a day for two weeks.  Keep in mind that it takes the lightness several months to even out.

If it doesn't work, your pediatrician or dermatologist should be able to help.

Best.
