White spot on lip and irritation .

by Zoomer, Jan 21, 2007 12:00AM
I have noticed that I have a white spot on my upper lip and a my lip feels like it is chapped all the time.  It was treated with liquid nitrogen but did not help...what can I do to help it and what is it.  My doctor gave me protopic ointment 0.1% but it is not doing anything to help.  Does anyone else have that problem and found a solution for it.

Hi,

Since when are you having the symptoms? What is your age? Do you smoke?

Some causes of the symptoms you mention, could be lip biting, lip licking, Vit.B2 deficiency, smoking, overexposure to sun and ill fitting dentures. In extreme cases, this could be due to bacterial or fungal skin infection.

You need to drink plenty of water daily – around 1.5 – 3 litres per day and eat a balanced diet. Do not keep your lips dry; apply lip balm which contains sunscreen – preferably a medicated one.

If you have cracks at the corner of your mouth it indicates B2 deficiency in this case you need to take B2 supplements.

If the symptoms still persist, consult your skin specialist or dermatologist.

Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any other doubts.

Regards.

Hi,

You could be having a fungal infection or some vitamin or mineral deficiency.

You should take some multi vitamin tablets and consult your doctor to rule out a fungal infection and find out the exact cause.

Since when have you noticed these symptoms? Do you smoke?

Try to avoid sun exposure, apply a medicated lip balm with sun screen regularly and drink plenty of water and try to drink less tea, coffee or aerated drinks.

It would be advisable to consult a skin specialist for your symptoms and a proper clinical examination.

Let us know if you need any other information and post us on how you are doing.

Regards.
