Why can't I get any relief from this severe dry skin?

I have always had oily skin.  However now my skin on my hands and all over my body is painfully dry.  I've used prescription ointments from my dermatologist, tried oatmeal baths, switched to showers, bathing in cooler water and then applying thin layer of vaseline - and nothing is working. It is awful.  I switched laundry detergents - no one has an answer.  It is driving me crazy.  I do take synthroid but my doctor said my level is fine.  I don't know what to do.  It is becoming unbearable.  Does anyone have any advice?

I had thyroid cancer and had thyroid removed in 2003.  I'm on synthroid and my doctor hasn't said anything about the levels being off.  However, I had blood work done somewhere else and was told my dosage is too high.  I don't know what to do.... does it sound like it's too high or too low?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Dry skin is a symptom of thyroid disease like hypothyroidism. The mainstay of management is liberal use of moisturizers after washing with luke warm water. Soap should be used minimally. Moisturizers should be reapplied liberally during the day.You can also use a topical cortisone (steroid) cream or ointment like dermacort(hydrocortisone). Adding a humidifier to the central heating system of your home or using a humidifier also helps.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
