accutane and multivitamins

by brian300, Oct 20, 2007 02:12PM
Hey doc,
My question is concerning the use of multivitamins well on accutane specifically one-a-day men's health. The dermatologist that prescribed me accutane never said a thing about taking multivitamins well on accutane. Now come to find out after doing research on the internet that is recommended not to be taken together. I took the multivitamins and acutane at the same time, mostly after I ate dinner. I’m experiencing some long lasting accutane side effects could the combination of the multivitamin and the accutane made me more likely to have side effects? Any information that you can tell me would be helpful. I am very worried about this.

Not to worry.  Because Accutane comes from Vitamin A, it's generally recommended that patients on this drug not take more vitamin A, since that might increase dryness while you're taking it, but there's no reason to be concerned about long-term side-effects.  Long-term side-effects after Accutane are very uncommon, so you ought to check with your dermatologist to see whether that's in fact what is going on.

Best.

The amount of vitamin A they put in multivitamins is relatively small so don't worry. But next time you take a prescription medicine be sure to tell your doctor about all other medication you're taking including herbal remedies and over the counter drugs in case they are contra-indicated with your prescription drugs.
