allergic reaction

My dentist put me on clindmycin HCL for a small mouth infection (food pushed down by flossing).  After 3 capsules of the drug I immediately took myself off clindamycin.  Went back to dentist 2 days later telling him of rash over torso, scalp, and left hand.  He told me to use Cortaid.  I did, dosen't seem to do anything.  I am allergic to Penicillin and double checked with the Dr. and the pharmacy before taking this drug. A friend of mine is a Family Practioner and told me to leave work and go home and take 2 benadryl every 8 hours.  Will the benadryl clear up the rash?  How long does it take  to recover from something like this?  Should I not hve been put on this drug with a severe penicillin allergy?
Thank You for your time.

Hi,

Here are answers to your questions:

Anti-histamines such as Benadryl will help your condition if its an allergy to your drug.

It may take some time, the exact period may not be possible to predict, for this rash to go away.

It is not possible to say if you should or should not have been put on this drug. Clindamycin is in fact given to some patients in case they have allergy to penicillin.

You may ask your doctor in detail about this.

Hope this helped. Let us know if there are any other queries and keep us posted on your health.

Best regards
