was completely excised. I would like to know if 1. these findings warrant additional skin excision? 2. Is this in fact melanoma? What exactly does the diagnosis mean? 3. What effects does this have on my unborn child at 29 weeks? Here is the path.
"Final Pathologic Diagnosis:
-Tiny pigmented epidermal fragment with atypical
with keratinocytes, and parakeratotic scale which also contains pigment. There apperars to be melanocytic hyperplasia, with an increased number of melonocytes singly disposed within the basal layer and mid epidermis. Melanophages are present in the dermis, along with perivascular lymphocytic inflammation. Melin A immunostain was performed but insufficient tissue remained to garner useful information from this.
Comment
A definitive diagnosis cannont be made because of the small size of the specimen. The differential diagnosis could include a portion of a pigmented seborrheic keratosis or an atypical intraepidermal melanocytic neoplasm. Additional sampling of complete excisison is reccomended."
Hello,
Defnitely this report is inconclusive because of the small specimen. The pathologist has stated that it can be a seborrheic keratosis or a melanoma. Seborrheic keratosis is a benign growth and does not turn malignant. But melanoma needs to be ruled out as cellular atypia is seen. I would suggest you a repeat biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Please discuss this with your dermatologist.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Thank you for your reply. I have an appointment for a re-excision on Monday. I am still very scared that this is melanoma. If it is melanoma I hope that it has not spread past the epidermis.
