basal cell carcinoma surgery versus radiation

by jojo721, Aug 08, 2008 08:55PM
My mother is 87 years old. She has basal cell carcinoma on two spots on her nose. She has Alzheimer's but is still ambulatory and in good spirit with periods of confusion. She has had cancer of the colon and also anal cancer both of which are in remission at the moment (one of them is likely to return because it was found in a lymph node in her groin). She had a combination of radiation and chemo about 2 years ago and has been doing well. In spite of her medical history I am concerned about the extent of disfigurement with surgery but also want to make the best ethical and medical decision for her. What do you advise? Is a second opinion in order? Is this so slow growing that there is no point in treating it? I want to help her make the best decsion possible. Thank you for your help. JoJo
