birthmarks

by rachaelnicole, Jun 24, 2008 03:48AM
HI,

My sons birthmark seems to be changing lately. he says it is itchy and this morning it looked like a pizza with red dots. Does this need to be checked out? I am very worried.

Thanks

How are you? Birthmarks are colored skin spots that either are present at birth or develop shortly after birth. There are two main categories of birthmarks: red birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks. Red birthmarks are colored, vascular skin markings that develop before or shortly after birth. Pigmented birthmarks, on the other hand, are skin markings that are present at birth. The marks may range from brown or black to bluish or blue-gray in color. Most birthmarks need no treatment. They often fade as a child grows older. However, it is best to see a doctor right away if there is any pain, bleeding, itching, inflammation, or ulceration of a congenital nevus or other skin lesion.

I hope this helps. Take care and keep us posted.
