blue Lips

by kimsnoopy, Mar 13, 2008 12:35AM
hi... I have had blue lips for almost a year. In sept.. they were so bad that I went to hospital because I also felt whoozie. All oxygen levels normal. I was given heart monitor.. where It showed episodes of fast heart rate on and off.. but then had cardiac mri done.. and no blockage anywhere. I also was at the time Extremely high cholesterol 532 as a matter of fact. I was put on crestor and blue lips became almost un noticable.. chol dropped to just over 200.  I was off chol pills for 3 months.. and noticed blue lips coming back.. not as bad though. Went to doc... chol jumped to over 300.  I was told must be lack of oxygen to brain.. but even pulmonary tests.. room air test.. you name it have been done.. w/no answer. I was put on holter monitor X13 days.. showed episodes of fast heart rate 4 times.. but I've had this prob for over 12 years ever since thyroid was issue (hypothyroidism) I guess I'm writing all of this because I dont know where else to turn to. I've seen every doc I can possibly see (bills prove it) and I do have blue lips still but not as bad since chol dropped. Oh.. and if I lay down flat.. my lips are the color they should be.. if I stand up.. I can actually see them change color looking into a mirror. I tell docs that.. they think I'm nuts. Blood pressure perfect... Any suggestions on where to go from here???

Thank you for reading.. Kim

Hi,

Cyanosis is one of the signs that indicate hypoxia or decreased oxygen levels in the blood. Blue lips may indicate central cyanosis and this may be due to systemic cause such as low hemoglobin levels.

There are many causes of central cyanosis and this needs definite medical attention to trace out the cause. Do you have any breathlessness? Do you smoke? Do you have any other cardiovascular/ respiratory disorders?

This definitely needs medical attention and I urge you to find out the cause of this as soon as possible.

Regards

thank you for getting back with me on this. I do not smoke.. nor do I have any breathing problems. I had respiratory checked through spirometer.. and no prob at all. I'm bothered that no one can find answer.. yet.. I dont feel it's normal or right to have blue lips.  Is there any recommendation where to go next? I'm out of options on my side.. Family doc just ignores me now.. since all breathing tests came out normal.

Hi,

You may try to get a second opinion from another doctor if these symptoms persist.

Keep us posted on what your doctor says about this.

All the best
