, shaving. Sycosis barbae or Barber's itch is a staphylococcus infection of the hair follicles in the bearded area of the face, usually the upper lip. Shaving aggravates the condition.
In most cases of folliculitis, the damaged follicles are then infected with the bacteria Staphylococcus (staph). They enter the follicles through the tiny cuts made while shaving.
It presents as rash (reddened skin area) followed by an outbreak of pimples or pustules located around a hair follicle.
Topical antiseptic treatment is adequate for most cases. If it is not responsive then topical antibiotics such as mupirocin or neomycin containing ointment can bring about a resolution when applied on the bumps.
In severe cases, oral antibiotics may also be required.
