Is cortisone safe for my 4year old son? He has allergies on his legs.

Allergic reactions on the leg need be treated only with Corticosteroid medications.
If they are red bumps or hives then you can treat them with anti-histamine medications.
Both genetics and environmental factors play a role in the causation of this very common condition.

An allergy is caused by an oversensitive immune system, which leads to a misdirected immune response.  When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals, such as histamines. This causes itching, swelling, mucus production, muscle spasms, hives, rashes, and other symptoms.

Anti-histamine medications like Benadryl can be given to children to block the effects of histamine thus providing relief from the allergic reactions. Calamine lotion or anti-itch lotions can also be applied to soothe the skin on the affected areas.

Since children are more susceptible to the side effects of topical steroids, you should use the weakest strength possible for as short a time as possible.
