could it be herpes

Hi I am a 38 year old male and I have been sexually active for 12 years.  I will admit I have been sexually active with out a condom in the past 2 years on at least 2 occaisions
I recently noticed a red patch right underneath the head of my penis on the left side, at first I thought it had been some sort of abraision.  Do to the fact that my girlfriend and I had had sex when she had left her tampons in (we used vaseline as a lubricant against my better judgement the red area just seemed like dry skin and didnt hurt or itch. a few days later after a couple of days of frequent masturbation I went to the bath room and noticed the red area the skin had come off and there was something that was sort of whitish discharge or maybe it was just the soft skin (I dont know how to discribe it, So I wiped it off with toilet paper and being concerned I examined the paper it a little more closely and it didnt smell to good. There was something like a little round painful to the touch sore, left there, it wasnt raised or deep just more like an area where the skin had come off. I made an imediate appointment that night to get tested for and std and I am currently awaiting the results.  At the start the sore seems to sometimes give off a little clear liquid with that has stopped.the area is healing (it's been 3 days and it's mostly gone)
I have never had any pus filled blisters or little red bumps, this sore is the first real scare I have had in my life.  The doctor who examined me had the bed side manner of a cudgel and said it could be herpes and with somewhat less interest also mention it could be due to friction he made an appointment the following week for me to come back and be examined again (and hopefully have the results of my test).  The sore is healing up (this is the third day and it's mostly gone with no crusting whatsoever).  The sore is in an area where I have had really dry skin before and follows along the circumcision scar.  Teh doctor also said that it didnt look like it would have been the first outbreak, but as I mentioned I have never had sores or pusfilled blisted and in the days leading up to the red patch I thought were dry skin I experienced not tingling itching or burning (and no raised red bumps).  I know that I have to wait for the test to be certain, but what are the chances that this is herpes, the wait it killing me
