cyst-like ingrown hairs

I continue to experience cyst-like ingrown hairs on my inner thighs, even in the absence of hair removal procedures. It looks similar to cystic acne, though not as painful (except to look at).  What are the best ways to prevent ingrown hairs?  And, what can I do to treat ingrown hairs when I do get them??

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
A sebaceous cyst is a closed sac occurring just under the skin which contains a "pasty" or "cheesy" looking substance called keratin. They may occur anywhere on body but scalp, ears, back, face, and upper arm, are common sites for sebaceous cysts. Blocked sebaceous glands, swollen hair follicles and excessive testosterone production will cause such cysts. They are not related to PCOS.

Generally no treatment is required but they become painful then it means they are infected,Then surgical excision by traditional wide excision, minimal excision, and punch biopsy excision may be required.
I hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts.Kind regards

Many many thanks. I will look into mupirocin and/or neomycin and try that first.  If the symptoms persist I will certainly contact my dermatologist.

I'm not familiar with sebaceous cysts. Is it possible that what is going on is related in any way to PCOS, testosterone levels, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
It can be an ingrown hair or sebaceous cyst.

Pls keep the area clean and apply some topical antiseptics. Also wear loose-fitting cotton clothing and use an antibacterial soap or mild soap like dove.Avoid any kind of cosmetics. Topical antibiotics such as mupirocin or neomycin containing ointment are also useful. In case the symptoms persist then oral antibiotics may be needed.Pls consult a dermatologist in that case. Then sebaceous cysts have to be ruled out.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.Kind regards.
