What can I do to get rid of persistent dandruff? Medicated shampoos just make it worse. Also have itchy head sometimes.

You might have seborrheic dermatitis on your scalp.  I have it and if i don't shampoo my hair daily my head itches and gets alot of flakes.  My derm suggested that I buy a shampoo containing ketoconazole.  I use Nizoral, It doesn't clean very well but seems to deal with the flaking fairly well.

Exactly (Nizoral) it  deals with the flaking fairly well and if you stop using it after a month it does come back as worst as before.Too bad.Anything oral medication to pop up to treat this fungal thing off our scalp?Topicals does not seem to work as its best.

It does indeed sound like you've got Sebhorreic Dermatitis.  It's caused by the same yeast as dandruff, just with more intense symptoms, including crusty build up wherever you've itched too hard.. NIICE.  There is a product called Psoriasin for scalp available from shopinprivate.com.  It is a coal tar product which can be left to work on the scalp without making your hair greasy.  It is not a cure, but it definitely removes ALL my symptoms if I use it regularly.  The effectiveness of all other products, including Nizoral, diminishes with time (although Nizoral will seem like a miracle cure initially!).  I've used Psoriasin for years without the dreaded gradual tolerance building up.  Unfortunately, it's not the nicest smell, and it comes in a bottle unsuitable for scalp application (ie through hair), but I just decant it into a bottle with a long narrow nozzle I got from an art shop.

Hope this helps!

i also experienced the same thing. no shampoos were working. i recently had some really bad scalp problems . i had patch testing and found out i was allergic to hair dyes. the doctor has prescribed me olux, and several corticsteroids. i was also prescribed derma smooth. it says it is for psoriasis. it worked for a couple of weeks. but once i stopped using it i started getting the same problem. now they have me on another corticsteroid in drops. i just keep using them. that might be what you have to do because it seems that you have sebhorric dermatitis. you should wash your hair every day or every other. i know it can be very depressing. but hang in there. go to dermatolgist to get exact diagnosis. i am here to talk to.
